This article proposes to analyze how photography is represented in the literary work The Lying Life of Adults (La Vita Bugiarda degli Adulti) (2020), from the Italian writer Elena Ferrante. The paper intends to establish relations among this Bildungsromanand some characteristics, cultural practices, and possible meanings of photographic image. The theoretical framework on photography is based mainly on Sontag (2004), Fabris (2004), and Barthes (1984). The photographic image seems to play an important role in the novel, even though –and perhaps precisely because of this –it moves away from its referential character and fails to testify to reality.References
