This article was developed based on discussions generated by the Geography Teaching I discipline, taught in the semester 2022.1 at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, Caicó/RN campus. Its objective is to analyze Geography teaching practices in Elementary Education I in schools in the municipality of Caicó/RN, and how the process of choosing textbooks occurs, aiming to verify the criteria used by teachers and/or principals. The research was conducted through field visits to two schools – X and Y – in different neighborhoods. It involved the collection of data via a Google Forms questionnaire consisting of eight (8) open-ended questions that address the article's objective. Additionally, in the bibliographic research, school documents were used, such as contributions from the National Common Curricular Base (2018), Cavalcanti (2012), Cruz (2007), Franco (2016), and Goulart (2012). Finally, it was observed that teachers from the studied schools use diverse pedagogical practices, as well as varied teaching resources. However, there is a significant lack of knowledge about the criteria used for choosing textbooks, which is hypothetically compensated for by the use of innovative practices.
