The main objective of this study is to present the definition and spatialization of standard years, based on an analysis of the historical series of rainfall data corresponding to the period from 1986 to 2020. The selection criteria used were based on the need to contribute to a deeper and better understanding of the distribution of rainfall, since in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul there is a transitional strip that divides its climate into sectors, which are individualized into regional climates, according to their morphology and rainfall. For this study, standard years were chosen to effectively assess the variability and distribution of rainfall, as well as its repercussions on geographical space. The analysis of the thirty-five year period (1986-2020), on the monthly, seasonal and annual scales, made it possible to determine the dynamics of rainfall and identify both the years considered to be usual and those that were exceptionally dry or rainy. In the end, the cartographic products generated and the analyses carried out showed evidence of rainfall variability, especially from the 2000s onwards, the results of which indicated greater variability compared to the 80s and 90s. According to the Box Plot method, ten exceptional years were determined during the decade: 1997 (rainy), 1998 (rainy), 1999 (super dry), 2002 (dry), 2003 (rainy), 2007 (dry), 2009 (rainy), 2017 (rainy), 2019 (dry) and 2020 (dry). The years 2000, 2001, 2008, 2016 and 2018 were classified as usual, as they precede or follow exceptional years and were more frequent during the analysis of the historical series.
