Floods are one of the main and most devastating extreme hydrological events worldwide, causing more and more damage and losses, especially in developing countries. Risk assessment is one of the main mechanisms for managing the impacts caused by these events. This article aims to carry out a bibliometric review of the development of flood risk assessment between 2010 and 2024. The review was carried out using the Scopus database and the quantitative analysis using Bibliometrix software. Flood risk has become a concern on a global scale, reflecting an annual growth of 9.31 per cent in studies and publications related to this topic. China has the largest number of published articles and the journal Natural Hazards is the most important in this area. In recent years, the use of machine learning has been a trend in the field of flood risk assessment. Despite this growth and evolution in studies, two elements have still been used predominantly for risk assessment: hazard and vulnerability. However, recent research has introduced the degree of exposure as an important third element. To obtain more accurate and precise results, several authors have combined different flood risk assessment methodologies.
