This essay proposes approximations between childhood and language in the short story Tentação (1999), by Clarice Lispector. We analyze the child's apparitions and demonstrate how they metaphorize the idea of language as a hiccup – a poetic image created by Clarice and philosophically expanded here to relate childhood to the absence of voice. In that way, we dialogue with Brites (2021) and Lajolo (1997). In order to undo the notion of childhood as that which has no voice, we connect Larrosa (1996) and Bachelard (1988). So, we observe how the tale reveals childhood in a depth that complexify and refuses the authority of the adult over the child.
