The understanding and mapping of the submerged relief associated with the utilization of Geographic Information Systems have made it possible to obtain information on the geomorphological features, as well as the progress in the knowledge of the habitat and the marine resources. The primary objective of this study is the characterization and sectorization of the morphology at the bottom of the Babitonga Bay. The morphological map was created using the Benthic Terrain Modeller, by adopting a specific data dictionary for shallow marine environments. The classification of the marine landscape of Babitonga Bay resulted in two mappings on different scales, landscape zones and landscape structures. The methodology used has generated four marine landscape zones: plains, banks, depressions and slopes. The larger-scale analysis allowed the mapping of eight landscape structures: canals, local depressions, wide depressions on plains, deep plains, shallow plains, slopes, banks on plains and bank crests. Babitonga Bay is framed as a shallow estuarine complex, where 75% of the geomorphological features are found up to 5 m of depth. The most frequently landscape structures refer to the shallow plains, bank crests and canals that make up 78.3% of the bay. The areas located in the interior of the Babitonga Bay, at the mouth of the main rivers, have intense deposition in the form of shallow plains and bank crests. The central region of the bay has intense structural control with the formation of rocky islands and great variability of landscape features.
Key words: Marine geology, geomorphology, geoprocessing.
