Quantification of Above-Ground Carbon Stocks in the Maranhão Amazon
ABSTRACT
The Maranhense Amazon is an essential carbon reservoir, storing large amounts of CO2, which is vital for combating global warming. This study utilized remote sensing technologies and satellite data to quantitatively assess the carbon in the region's tropical forests. The main objective was to quantify and economically evaluate the carbon stocks in the forests of the Maranhense Amazon, using remote sensing data to analyze the vegetation, including the characteristics of terra firme forests, secondary vegetation, mangroves, and protected areas. It was found that the areas with the highest carbon concentration are the mature forests and secondary vegetation, particularly in the Rebio do Gurupi conservation unit and indigenous lands. The region is home to approximately 279 million tons of CO2, valued at 6.70 billion dollars. The study emphasizes the importance of adopting integrated and sustainable strategies that promote environmental protection alongside socioeconomic development, ensuring a resilient and prosperous future for the forests and their communities.
