Abstract

Efficient urban water management is crucial in the face of rapid urbanization and climate change, which impact the quality and availability of water resources. This study investigates the potential of infrared thermography to analyze surface runoff and sediment transport in urban environments, contributing to better drainage system management. An experimental shallow flow system was used, featuring an adjustable platform and a FLIR A50 thermal camera to capture thermal images of heated sediments in motion. Two sand granulometries were tested under two different flow rates. Sediment velocity was calculated from thermal spots in the images, using tracking software and statistical analysis to determine uncertainties. The data showed that infrared thermography is effective in measuring the velocity of transported sediments. The obtained velocities varied with the flow rates, being higher for the larger flow rate (Q2). Sediment granulometry did not significantly affect the measured velocity. Uncertainties associated with velocities were smaller in wider measurement intervals. Infrared thermography proved to be a valuable and precise tool for studying surface runoff and sediment transport dynamics in urban areas. The results provide insights for developing more effective and sustainable stormwater management strategies.
