Álbum de Pagu: an erotic and sacrificial ritual

Patrícia Galvão, or Pagu, despite being associated with the Brazilian modernist movement, still remains on the margins of analysis when thinking about the avant-garde of the period. However, Álbum de Pagu (1975 [1929]) is a set of poems with drawings focused on the eroticism of the female body, especially of Pagu herself, including the period of childhood. This essay will analyze it based on the concepts of constructive innocence (Andrade, 2017); subjectivity in modernist poetic making (Aranha, 1925); feminine and subversive erotic writing (Cixous, 2022); eroticism, transgression and sacrifice (Bataille, 1987). In the end, I propose a reading of the Album as a ritual.
