ChoosingSão Paulo to be home tothe Faculty of Law was contested because of São Paulo’s speech, classified, back then,as the "most incorrect" dialect in Brazil–during the debates of 1823’s Constitution. More than a century later, this same dialectal variety has some of its variants of speech observed in major television programs. In order to understand this trajectory, it was observed, in travelers' diaries from the 19th century and in the grammars of the time, the prestige ofdifferent linguistic traits found in São Paulo and how they relate to urban areas of the city.References
