This research was motivated by importance that this thematic presents in the perspective of provide objective informations as tool to delineate a synoptic frame of differents forms of land use and occupation in the upper course of the hydrographic basin of the Poti river, state of Ceará. In this study, the land use forms were mapped using geoprocessing and remote sensing techniques, in order to understand the real potentialities and limitations in the aforementioned space sector, especially in the perspective of subsidizing environmental planning. We adopt the methodological proposal of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), based on the Technical Manual of Land Use (2013). Were applied digital image processing techniques, using supervised classification pixel-by-pixel based on Maximum Likelihood method. The definitions and nomenclatures adopted are related to types of agricultural use (pasture, temporary and permanent crops) and non-agricultural (urbanized areas). In this way, it was possible to map the following typologies, namely: I - Natural Vegetation Area; II - Agricultural Anthropic Area; III - Non-Agricultural Anthropic Area; IV - Waters. The results point out the potential of Geoprocessing techniques for this analysis, revealing the present stage of land use and occupation in the study area.
