Melodic contours in interrogative sentences: propositional attitudes in loud reading

This paper intonation contours and production of propositional attitudes in interrogatives. By means of loud reading recorded by 24 informants, the patterns: neutral yes-no question, request for confirmation, incredulous yes-no question and rhetoric yes-no question are analyzed. This study is based on Intonational Phonology — Pierrehumbert (1980), Ladd (1996), Gussenhoven (2004) and in Moraes (2008) that describe the melodic categorization in the intonation of Brazilian Portuguese. We are guided by the question: With what recurrence will the patterns studied be produced?, assuming that the request for confirmation and the and rhetoric yes-no question would be produced in a less recurrent way. In the corpus, there was 1 occurrence of the rhetoric yes-no question and none of the request for confirmation.
