The changes in the use and land cover in urban areas have provided changes in thermal field with diverse impacts of those environments: formation of heat islands, rising average temperatures, reduced relative humidity and thermal discomfort. The main objective of this work is to evaluate the urban thermal field and the formation and intensity of heat island of representative points of the urban city of João Pessoa \ PB. We conducted a literature review regarding the topic and study area. To collect the data of temperature and relative humidity were used thermo Hygrometers (HOBOS - U10) installed in the samples (Mata do Buraquinho; Manaíra, Cabo Branco and Bancários) during the rainy season of 2012. Data were collected at intervals of one at a time and evaluated in Excel. The analyses of use and land cover were based on nine classes according to the percentage of the elements of the soil cover through quantitative and qualitative methods, according to Santos (2011). The results indicate that the air temperature was higher in the experimental samples near the coastal strip, being the point located in the neighborhood of Manaíra with the formation of the higher heat islands and average temperatures. The increasing urbanization of the city and the reduction of green areas in the coastal districts have contributed significantly to rising temperatures and reduced quality of life of the living population in those areas.
